The Real Princess Bride

“Someday my prince will come. Someday I’ll find my love and how thrilling that moment will be.” Woman was made to love and honor Man and the natural proclivity is to search for the that one true and charming man who will ride in on that white horse, swooping in to rescue us from the boring, mundane sometimes evil valley below. The scene depicted is riding off together to live happily ever after. The groom is exceedingly strong, yet endlessly gentle. The bride is adorned in pristine white garments, the picture of wide-eyed purity. Oh yes, the search for true love is not for women only.  Though men quite certainly have different presumptions about how to know when love is real, the quest to fill that desire is equally as strong.

As a girl, I grew up sugar and spice, but not necessarily all things nice. So the search for Prince Charming was on. The emphasis to be beautiful enough to secure Mr. Right started innocently enough; with tightly wound golden locks adorned with a plastic crown. Transitioning from teenager to young adult heightened the need to be loved by someone special. To quote another musical that took scripture out of context, my search could be summed up with “any dream will do.” (Comment if know that musical.) Rescue me – come on and rescue me from this low income, lost hope way of living life. It’s interesting how far anyone will go to find what they think will make them happy; what will make life complete. Most of the time that concludes with a downward spiral, which forces one to wake up to reality: but not always.

It’s fun to play dress up, get on the “Sunday best” and look like a lady. Sometimes little girls just don’t want to grow up and innocently perpetuate the myth of the princess bride in various ways. Upon coming to a saving faith in Jesus Christ however we see the true deliverer devoid of fantasy wrapped up in sorcery, wicked stepmothers and evil queens. In the kingdom of Christ we won’t find talking crickets that with the initials J.C. that act as spirit guides or ascended masters on the African plain.  As Christians we are committed to allowing Jesus full rein to reign in our lives as the Prince of Peace and the lover of our souls. Instead of gazing into the looking glass, being deceived into thinking it measures our value, “we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 3:18) It is Jesus we are longing to see, His image we desire to reflect.

It was jarring to have my little girl bubble burst, but oh so worth it to acquire in its place a greater understanding of what it means to live true life, the Christian life. “For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” (2 Corinthians 4:5-7)

The Lord wants us to use our time, talent and treasure to search for and serve Him – to be used by Him. Remember how He says He will come for His church at a time not expected? (Matthew 25:11) His people need to be ready, filled with His love, adorned with our wedding garments. We are His Bride. He says this in Ephesians 5, “Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” (24-27) Since the image of my natural body is marred due to the ‘ravages of time’ and the effects of cancer treatments, the way the Lord sees me on the inside must be satisfying enough.

As a wife I look to, lean on and love my husband, but He cannot in any way take the place reserved for Christ my heavenly husband to whom I am eternally joined. All members of the true church described for us in Scriptures are the ‘Real Princess Bride’, clothed in pure white. We will be called one day by our husband Jesus Christ to “come up here” and be joined together forever with Him. “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready. And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!' And he said to me, These are the true sayings of God." (Revelation 19:7-9)

Afar Off

How close do you want to get to God?  Pausing for thought on that? Truth be told, often we want the fringe benefits God can provide: lasting health, wealth and safety, but naturally tend to keep God Himself on the periphery. Charlatans prey on our skittishness about holiness, pretending to be God's voice by promising temporal earthly treasures, but fall short when their prophecies fail to come true. Sadly, these wolves in sheep’s clothing think nothing of fleecing the flock. Near-sighted sheep will follow these false prophets, squandering their lives and fortunes believing their poisonous promises.  One wonders why? Approaching God’s throne personally and intimately should be an amazingly enticing prospect. To draw near to the Creator of the Universe and walk with Him in the cool of the day. What could be greater?!

Adam and Eve had it that good, didn’t they? But they quickly traded it away for a taste of the power to know good and evil. Seeing how evil can manifest itself it's clear they made a very bad trade. Upon rebelling, a wall of separation instantly went up between God and man. God cannot walk, stand or sit in the presence of sin. Oh how He pitied His creation! How He must have mourned over the loss of fellowship!

Enter Moses 2,500 years later. Moses sees the burning bush, but does he separate himself or draw closer? Wisely, he draws near; he desires to see this marvelous sight. Moses is called out from obscurity where he’s been hiding out in the desert among the Midianites. God gives him the job of returning to his native Egypt and lead his people, Israel from slavery and oppression. But before he could hear this call, Moses had to draw near to the Holy fire of God.

Just as Moses was told to remove his worn, dirty sandals, (Exodus 3:2) we must cast off our flesh, leaving it buried where it belongs, as we approach our Mighty Deliverer.  After the miracles, after the Exodus, after the manna in the desert the tribes of Israel gathered at the base of the mountain and “witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die."  (Exodus 20: 18-19) Too often, we resemble the tribes. We just want to keep the Lord at arm’s length.

The religions of the world are set up to make their followers do something or go through someone else rather than speak with the True and Living God. Praise the Lord He doesn't need to rely on us to reach all the lost sheep. Rather, He humbled Himself to become a man, never stopped being God, to die for sinners, breaking down the wall of separation once and for all! (Ephesians 2:14) Jesus, the perfect man and perfect God did the work we could not do, making the perfect way back to Him. May we never allow the walls of pride, lies, or religion to separate us from coming completely to the Great God and Savior, the Deliverer of our souls, Jesus Christ.  Don’t stand “afar off.” Come near to Jesus, the only true way back to the Father!

High Country

Ah yes – horseback riding in the high country around Tucson; nothing quite like it, especially less than a year after a major surgery. Not long after I mounted the unknown steed as we traversed the rocky, narrow (not to mention steep paths) I began to wonder ‘what was I thinking – risking falling off this beast in my still fragile condition?’ Funny, when I was young and foolhardy I thought nothing of throwing caution to the wind and doing really risky things, but not now. No – not now that I am faced with the brevity of this life. Back to the point of this tale…The equine kind chosen for me goes by the name of Tommy Boy. I explained to Tommy Boy in no uncertain terms that I didn’t want to charge forth – I don’t race anymore, as if he should care. Making ascents and descents upon this terrain - this dusty cactus laden way it occurred to me ‘I’m committed – there’s no turning back; I’m going to have to trust good ole Tommy Boy to safely return me to the corral intact.’

This whole adventure reminded me of the landscape of one’s life. The path isn’t easy. There are risks, hazards and many twists and turns to navigate.  Unfriendly, hungry beasts may pop up out of nowhere to put a damper on the expedition. Yet there’s no turning back, especially as a Christian – I’m committed. It’s not stubborn determination. Those that are born again know there’s nowhere else to go. As Peter said to Jesus “Lord to whom shall we go. You have the Words of Eternal Life.” (John 6:68) Yet the path is hard, stressful, and agonizingly painful at times. Where does peace of mind and spirit come from?  Being totally surrendered to Holy Spirit, completely dependent on Him to carry me all the way Home is the key to such peace.  The Holy Spirit isn’t as some think - a warm feeling in the tummy or some mystic guide to be summoned up at will. He is a person with character traits like mere mortals, yet so much greater! ‘His thoughts are not our thoughts; His ways are higher than our ways.’ (Isaiah 55:9) He is the third member of the Godhead.  Jesus told us the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter, Teacher, and Helper.  (John 14)   The Holy Spirit brings to our remembrance the things of God just when we need the right words to say. Even though God is so much greater than any horse I couldn’t help but see how like “Tommy Boy” carried me safely back to the corral, the Holy Spirit will bring me securely through every trial and convey my spirit into the presence of the Lord when it’s time to leave this earth.

Strange the things which come to mind when you’re held captive by circumstances, hanging tight to a saddle horn in the desert. Disease can easily hold one’s body and mind captive. Thoughts about how to get well or just plain deal with a life re-defined can be all consuming. During my captivity with cancer purposely lifting up the Lord has done much more than gotten me by, it’s been the very air I breathe. I know this now more than ever before; God’s Word can be trusted to support and sustain us as we pass through dangerous territory packed with plenty of thorn-laden plants and wily coyotes.  See here in Psalm 18 verses 28-33…”For You will light my lamp; The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall. As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.” The horse took me places I could never go on my own. By his strength I was able to climb the high places. It is the same with the Lord.

Whether you are struggling with a disease or not this message is still for you as much as it is for me. No one leaves this earth without first encountering a trial of some kind. It is the nature of being human to be tested and tried. Trying to get over it with the ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ philosophy is hollow, devoid of substance. Only Jesus Christ offers the promise to take the burdens off our shoulders. He says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30) Oh yes, let’s trust Jesus to take us safely all the way Home!

Cancer Free?

According to the Bible, Adam & Eve (before the fall) and the Incarnate Jesus were the only persons who we could honestly say were cancer-free. Of course Jesus had a perfect body and never experienced any disease.  Right after sin came in the first couple lived to be hundreds of years old before they began realizing the effects of sin on their bodies.  Scientists have found evidence of cancer in the fossil record so it’s been around for a long time. It’s common knowledge that all people have cancer cells in their bodies. Our immune system “finds them and destroys them before they get a chance to multiply and cause problems.(Wiki.answers.com) Clearly immune systems get weakened from environmental causes, as a result of unhealthy choices, and through the aging process, but what might not be so obvious is a simple truth I’ve learned about this whole notion of being cancer-free.

Early on I aimed my sights at getting rid of all traces of cancer, hoping for it never to return again.  I had my heart set on it. Rightly so every step made toward seeing the Lord accomplish that mission was met with great rejoicing. But what now – what should my outlook be since learning two nodes recently found on PET scan are cancerous? How we respond to dilemmas popping up along the way is always a choice. Praise God, He has given me some insight on how to see this new development. Cancer can put a stranglehold on hope, but I can be free from worrying about the future because Jesus is already there. God’s Word teaches “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4)

The earthly heart might solely be concerned with cancer or any other disability for that matter. However, with belief in Jesus Christ comes absolute certainty that He is with us throughout our sojourn here, giving us hope we can put worries to rest. Setting our minds “on things above” means receiving and embracing His peace, patience, goodness – those godly attributes that flow from God’s throne. In spite of his earthly trials, the Christian has eternal joy set before him just as Jesus did when He bore the cross of shame on our behalf. (Hebrews 12:2) We do not have hope in this world, rather we desire the “better country” Abraham sought as described in Hebrews 11. There will come a day that I will be able to truly say I’m free from all diseases.

Freedom from the presence of cancer will be a tangible and eternal reality when God creates the new heavens and new earth. “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." (Revelation 21:4) We will then be absolutely free from all the affects of sin, guaranteed. There’s s song playing on the radio by Building 429 these days that rings in my head: “All I know is I’m not home yet. This is not where I belong. Take this world but give me Jesus. This is not where I belong.” Hallelujah!!

Servant Leadership

Jesus said…“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” (John 15:13)  Jesus said…”I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11) No doubt about it; knowledge sure is essential in navigating life and living out one’s vocation. There’s nothing wrong with seeking a more excellent understanding of subjects of interest that will enhance our overall human experience through invention, design and science, as long as these intellectual leaps don’t rub God’s moral compass the wrong way. By all means, go ahead and get more education that will help you do your job better, with more zeal and expertise. Be careful though not to make knowledge an idol, usurping the Lord’s place as the giver of any fact which may be revealed to you. Before Jesus comes again to execute justice on the earth, we must come to the realization that Jesus is God, and only He can save us. (Matthew 12:36) As a Christian I’m assured that my life is hid with God in Christ, so there’s great comfort in not needing to “know it all.” One thing I have learned is that there is freedom in serving, faithfully serving our Lord and faithfully serving others. And what better place to practice serving than at work?

Throughout my years, I’ve had a few servant leaders who were fair and giving in their management style. I can’t help but reflect on that now. One used to say, “My job is to get you what you need so you can do your job.” That kind of wisdom can’t be taught or bought. It is more than practical – it is wisdom from above. “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” (James 3:17) Jesus, the Son of God is the epitome of servant leadership. So many examples from the Gospels portray the Savior serving the Father by providing for others; first giving them God’s eternal truth, then providing physically, from feeding of the 5000 to healing the man born blind. With regard to Heavenly wisdom, Christ had it in abundance as the Incarnate Deity. With regards to working with men, He knows what to do perfectly.  After all, He knows all men. “You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.”  (Psalm 139)

From the human perspective, it isn’t that easy getting other people what they really need, putting them ahead of myself. There is a danger in falling back on past experiences, relying on our own ideas. Many people in Scripture learned the futility of trusting in wits and intellect to get them through life. Haman was alive during the time of (Queen Esther) and he was a schemer. He trusted his understanding of politics, his relationship with the King and would stop at nothing to ensure that all bowed down to him. One Jew refused to do so and he schemed to have all the Jews destroyed. Esther herself intervened to stop Haman’s plot by putting her life on the line in approaching the King to petition him to stop Haman’s plot to annihilate the Jews. (Esther 7) It’s not always easy to know what to do, but one thing is for sure, we always need to seek the Lord before we move forward.

I praise God, He allows every trial like cancer and every challenge like learning how to effectively lead to not only help others, but draw each of us closer to Himself. Servant leadership lays it all down for others. Pride can’t live in a temple totally given over to the Lord.  Whatever our position in this life, the Lord desires complete submission from all of us. Let’s allow Him to do this magnificent work in us and through us for His glory and our own good. “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Potent Weaponry

A couple of weeks ago I discovered that two lymph nodes in my chest are cancerous. The good news is they can be treated with radiation treatments – at least that’s the rumor. One of the nodes is close to my heart; we pray not on the heart because that would be a tricky surgical procedure and I’m not craving more surgery. Make no mistake: I don’t want this blog to ever be a platform to complain about my situation! I recently found a blog for Fox News.com by a woman going through cancer and it’s a depressing read. Complaining does no earthly good. My latest condition however has given me pause for thought on how pervasive cancer can be if left untreated. It invades healthy tissue silently with stealth and grows under the surface until it manifests into a tumor which lights up like neon on diagnostic scans. After all the treatment I’ve had, one would think, ‘it’s all gone – how could there still be cancer hanging around.’ I’ve learned it doesn’t stay put, but breaks off microscopically and travels to find other healthy tissue to destroy. A cancer tumor or node must be the size of a pea to be detected on scans, which means it’s had time to grow large enough to be treatable – doctors don’t concern themselves with tiny irregularities; only bright lights. Clearly a weapon stronger than the cancer is required to vanquish the advancing enemy.

To get my mind off this recent development I think Jesus got me thinking on how much the nature of cancer reminds me of sin. The epistle of James teaches: “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” (James 1:14-16) The effects of sin may not be seen initially since most us of do our best to secret away carnal lusts or dishonest gain. Cancer works that way, hiding out – trying to go undetected and left unchecked it grows, travelling to other vital organs. Sin similarly takes over every part of our lives, affecting those we love, as well as those that shoulder the trial alongside us.

The agent prescribed to kill the cancer must be stronger than the disease, but with that power comes side effects that can be painful. Hair loss, painful joints, sleeplessness are common. The body, once familiar and whole is impaired and altered by surgery and chemo treatments. Getting rid of sin in our lives can be painful as well. We’re used to behaving in certain ways, using unseemly language, going places that are unhealthy, but consider sin is not a loving master. “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?” (Romans 6:16) Just like untreated cancer, sin always leads to death and the worst death is eternal separation from God.

The best weapon to kill sin is not man-made; rather it is the power of the God of the Universe, Jesus Christ. When He ascended to Heaven, the Holy Spirit came to convince any willing heart that Jesus is the cure for sin. A scripture has often come to mind through this battle against cancer. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16) The human suit of armor begins to fall off. Layers of selfishness and arrogance are replaced with the armor of God: “the belt of truth, the shield of faith, the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.” (Ephesians 6) Let us remember no matter the type of trials we may encounter in this temporal life, Jesus extends this invitation: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” (Revelation 3:20,21)
