“The fool says in His heart there is no God (Psalm 14:1).” Straightforward, to the point; a real
attention getter! Yes, there was a time I sure acted like there was no God,
foolishly thinking I could do as I pleased, cover it with a lie and somehow
escape judgment. Fast forward twenty years later and now I completely agree
with this statement: “For since the creation of the world His invisible
attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even
His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…” (Romans 1:20)
The earth hangs on nothing (Job 26:7) and spins in orbit perfectly
to sustain life for nearly 7 billion souls. How is that possible except by the
hand of the Lord? Consider the complexity of the human body and its ability to
repair itself? To my surprise my surgeon,
admitted how God designed the body to adapt to trauma, such as when he took my
lung out. Many will believe and even happily accept the death and resurrection
of Jesus but many don’t believe God’s Word from cover to cover. If they do
their life choices betray their stated beliefs.
For a moment pause to think about the need to believe Jesus paid
it all on the cross and rose from the dead on the third day, just as He said He
would. Jesus emphatically stated, “if you do not believe that I am He,you will die in your sins."
(John
8:24). He was saying He is the pre-existent, eternal one, the Creator and
the Savior, the one who appeared to Moses in the burning bush, “I am that I
am.” (Exodus 3) Now,
if we believe Jesus is the one and only God, the one and only way to heaven,
why such difficulty taking Him at His word in other matters of importance? The
book of James warns us not to be double-minded or doubt because we’ll be tossed
in the wind-unstable in all our ways (James 1).
If I believe God for eternal life, for healing, providing
for my physical needs, but reject what He says about the need to live above
reproach, isn’t that being double minded, lukewarm, and carnal? Many today say it’s unloving to call out
activities which can cause some to stumble in the faith or keep others from
entering the kingdom of God. Jesus and His disciples didn’t agree. “Do you not
know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be
deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards,
nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians
6:9-10)
All sin hurts God, others and self. If we really love others
as much as we say we do, we’ll show them how to remove the cancer of sin before
it kills them or worse yet sends them to eternal death without Christ. The Lord
desires for us to echo the sentiments of Paul when he poured out his heart to
the Ephesian church elders, “Therefore I testify to you this day that I am
innocent of the blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you
the whole counsel of God.” (Acts 20:26-27) “The whole counsel of God”
means believing His Word from cover to cover. Does that mean we have to know
the whole Bible to effectively share Christ with those around us? No, the point
is to desire the truth of God, determine to put to death the lies of the world
and believe Jesus “has given to us all things that pertain to life and
godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue…” (2
Peter 1:3)
